Where Is Mount Zas and Why It’s Worth Hiking

Mount Zas is located in the central and eastern part of Naxos, towering over the town of Filoti. With an official elevation of 1,003 meters (3,291 feet) it is the highest point in the Cyclades.

Mount Zas gets its name from Greek Mythology where it is said that Zeus spent much of his time around the area and was a sacred place. There is even a cave named after him nearby.

We completed this hike in July of 2026 and we can confirm that it is totally worth it. Once you reach the top you get 360 degree panoramic views of the island where you can see towns sprinkled around and other islands dotting the sea.

Mount Zas Trail Difficulty

We’d describe the Mount Zas hike as moderate to difficult depending on your hiking experience and how comfortable you are on uneven, rocky terrain. There’s a steady climb to the summit, the trail is well-marked and doesn’t require any scrambling or technical climbing.

The hike begins on a wide gravel path with a few stone steps before gradually becoming rockier. As you climb higher, you’ll encounter looser rocks and uneven terrain.

The final push to the summit involves stepping over larger boulders, but we never felt like it required climbing or any special skills.

The biggest challenge isn’t the trail, it’s the sun. Much of the hike offers very little shade, so if you’re visiting during the summer, bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. Starting early in the morning will make the hike much more enjoyable.

How to Get to the Mount Zas Trailhead

There are a few different routes you can take to hike Mount Zas, which can make choosing the right trailhead confusing. For this guide, we are covering the Agia Marina trailhead, which is the route we took and the one we recommend for most visitors. This route is shorter and has a more gradual climb compared to starting from Aria Spring.

Here is the exact route in AllTrails we used to navigate the hike.

How to Get to Mount Zas by Bus

We reached the Mount Zas trailhead by bus, and honestly, it was much easier than we expected. This was one of the reasons we felt confident recommending Naxos without a car. We took the bus from Naxos Town and they have a stop at Agia Marina.

After getting off the bus at Agia Marina, walk uphill along the winding road for about 10 minutes. You’ll see signs for Mount Zas and the beginning of the hiking trail.

The bus ride took about 45 minutes and cost €3.80 each way. The return bus picks up from the same stop.

Important: The bus to Agia Marina does not run as frequently as the beach routes, so plan your hike around the bus schedule. Before starting your hike, check the return bus times so you aren’t stuck waiting several hours after finishing.

How to Drive to Mount Zas

You can drive to the trailhead, but parking is very limited. You may want to arrive early to secure a spot or you may need to park in Filoti. Parking in Filoti will add about 30 – 45 minutes each way to your hike.

What to Bring for the Mount Zas Hike

Mount Zas isn’t a technical hike, but the combination of rocky terrain and the strong Greek summer sun means you’ll want to come prepared. These are the items we brought with us and would recommend for this hike.

  • Water (2L per person)
  • Sunscreen/Hat/Sunglasses
  • Snacks (Great for the top 🙂)
  • Sturdy Shoes (No flip flops!)
  • Hiking Poles (Not required, but useful)
  • Downloaded Hike Map (We used this map!)
  • A Little Toilet Paper (No facilities on the trail)

What Is the Best Time of Year to Hike Mount Zas?

The best time to hike Mount Zas is generally spring and fall when temperatures are cooler and the weather is more comfortable for hiking. However, Mount Zas is accessible year-round, and each season offers a different experience.

We completed the Mount Zas hike in July 2026 and honestly loved our experience! Yes, it was hot, but we came prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, and sun protection.

We started our hike around 11:00 AM (we aren’t exactly early morning hikers 😛but there is an earlier bus), and while we were expecting large crowds, we actually found the trail to be surprisingly quiet.

That being said, if we were choosing the perfect time to hike Mount Zas, we would pick fall for the cooler temperatures and more comfortable hiking conditions.

If you are hiking during the summer months, we would recommend starting earlier in the morning to avoid the strongest heat of the day.

Best Season for the Mount Zas Hike

Summer (June–August): Summer is the most popular time to visit Naxos, but it is also the most challenging time to hike Mount Zas. The trail has very little shade, and the combination of heat, sun, and wind can make the climb feel much harder.

If you’re hiking in the summer (like we did in July), we highly recommend starting early in the morning, bringing plenty of water, and checking the weather forecast before you go.

Fall (September–November): Fall is one of the best times to hike Mount Zas. Temperatures are cooler, skies are often clear, and you’ll avoid the peak summer crowds. This is probably the season we’d choose if we were planning this hike again.

Winter (December–February): Winter can be a peaceful time to hike Mount Zas if you want solitude, but weather conditions can change quickly. Be sure to check the forecast, as rain and wind can make the rocky trail more challenging.

Spring (March–May): Spring is another excellent time to hike Mount Zas. The weather is mild, wildflowers begin blooming, and you’ll avoid the intense summer heat.

  2. You can extend your hike to Visit Zeus’ Cave or explore the village of Filoti and get some lunch!
  3. Download the bus timetables! Even though we had reliable cell service for most of our hike, it’s always a good idea to download the bus timetable before you leave Naxos Town. That way you won’t have to worry about finding the return bus after your hike.
