Prepare to embark on an unforgettable adventure as we guide you through the journey to these mesmerizing falls, share historical insights, and provide tips for an enriching experience.

Discovering the Falls

Located near Ashton, Idaho, Mesa Falls comprises two magnificent sections: Upper Mesa Falls and Lower Mesa Falls. The falls are renowned for their dramatic drops and awe-inspiring beauty, attracting nature enthusiasts, photographers, and adventure seekers from near and far.

You will drive along Old Highway 47 to the falls’ entrances. This scenic highway offers a picturesque journey through captivating landscapes. As you travel along this route, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of rolling hills, lush meadows, and towering mountains.

The road winds its way through charming small towns and rural communities, allowing you to experience the authentic charm of Idaho. You can discover hidden gems like local farm stands, quaint roadside cafes, and historic landmarks along the way.

After driving on Old Hwy 47 for about 15.5 miles from Ashton, you will come across the falls.

Exploring Upper Mesa Falls

Mesa Falls is part of the U.S. Forest Service, so there is a $5 entrance fee. When we went to the falls, it was self-service pay and the Mesa Fall Visitor Center, where the Upper Falls is located. So, we paid our five dollars and started exploring.

The Upper Mesa Falls has accessible paved trails that are incredible for all abilities. From the parking lot, you can walk on the paved loop trail about .5 miles long. Along the paved trail is a boardwalk trail that takes you closer to the falls. There are a few stairs on this trail, but overall this trail is easy to hike.

Upper Mesa Falls awaits you with its thundering cascades, plummeting 114 feet into the rugged canyon below as you walk along the trail—the well-maintained trails that wind through the lush forest, leading you to various viewpoints. As you approach the falls, prepare to be mesmerized by the sheer power of the water, the cool mist brushing your face, and the roar that resonates in your ears.

The sun shone during our visit, and the falls cast a beautiful rainbow. The area was so majestic.

We spend about 45 minutes in the upper falls area, but you could quickly complete this trail in about 25 – 30 minutes or take your time.

Unveiling Lower Mesa Falls

A short distance away lies Lower Mesa Falls, equally captivating with its 65-foot drop and impressive volume of rushing water. You can hop back into your car and drive a little less than .5 miles to reach the lower falls outlook or take a .9-mile hike from the upper falls area.

The Lower Mesa Falls area has less maintained trails and offers different viewpoints from a distance. You cannot get very close to the Lower Falls from the overlook area, but you still get amazing views.

We spent less time at the Lower Falls than the Upper Falls, but it was still beautiful and worth the stop.
