Our Favorite Spots in Naxos Town (And Why We Keep Going Back)
Naxos is famous for its incredible beaches, but some of our favorite memories from the island happened right in Naxos Town.
We originally chose to stay there because it made exploring the rest of the island by bus easy. What we didn’t expect was how much we’d enjoy simply wandering the town itself.
Between getting lost in the whitewashed alleyways, stopping at one bakery after another, and ending our evenings watching the sunsets, Naxos Town quickly became one of our favorite places in Greece.

1. Lagogiannis Bakery: Best Morning Cafe in Naxos Town

If we could only recommend one place to grab breakfast in Naxos Town, it would be Lagogiannis Bakery. We somehow found ourselves coming back almost every morning, partly because of the amazing pastries and partly because we couldn’t stop thinking about their chicken pies (kotopita). They also have your classic Greek pastries and coffees (try the classic freddo cappuccino). |

2. Old Market and Venetian Castle: Best Wandering Spot in Naxos Town
We loved the small winding alleyways of the Old Market in Naxos Town. We never really went with a plan of things to see or try which is kind of the magic. Every alley seemed to lead somewhere different. We’d turn a corner expecting another street and instead find a tiny church, a hidden courtyard, or another bakery.
You can wander around stopping in shops to find the perfect souvenir or trying different Greek treats that catch your eye.
Don’t worry about following Google Maps here, the best parts of the Old Market are the ones you stumble across by accident.

3. Paralia Agios Georgios: Best Beach in Naxos Town
We know Agios Georgios isn’t usually listed as the best beach on Naxos, but it ended up being our favorite. The soft sand, gentle waves, and easy walk from town meant we visited more than once during our stay.
There were plenty of sunbeds you could rent for the day and the beach has facilities like a shower and changing room plus it’s typically less than a 15 minute walk from anywhere in Naxos Town.
We preferred getting our own umbrella and laying with our towels on the sand.

4. Maro’s Taverna: Best Tavern in Naxos Town
We ended up at Maro’s Taverna twice during our stay, it was that good. Their portion sizes are generous, pricing is fair, and service is wonderful.
We loved their house made tzatziki! We also ordered the Naxian Potatoes, Exohiko in Pot (only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and Pork Soulvaki.

5. Temple of Apollo (But not at Sunset)

Almost every guide recommends visiting the Portara at sunset, and while it is beautiful, we actually preferred going in the morning. We’d go before it got too hot and the crowds came. We were able to really appreciate the beauty and history of the area better. We also went at sunset but it was very crowded. Everyone was trying to get the photo and getting down from the temple can take a while since there is only one staircase. |

Final Thoughts
Looking back, choosing Naxos Town as our base was one of the best decisions we made on the island. We loved having incredible food, a beautiful beach, and historic streets all within walking distance, while still being able to explore the rest of Naxos by bus.
If we returned tomorrow, we’d stay here again without hesitation.
