Points and Miles: Dipping our Toes

Brandon and I are avid Survivor watchers. We are late to the game and started watching it during Covid (along with many other shows). But Brandon had the brilliant idea to go to Fiji for our honeymoon, and I thought he was joking for the longest time. But guess what; we ended up booking a honeymoon to Fiji!! However, I am really cheap and could not fathom the idea of paying for a whole trip to Fiji which is where points started to come into play.

Kevin, Brandon’s brother, was at the beginning of planning his six-month adventure around the world and was getting into the travel hacking world. I had no idea what this was, but it could save me money, so I was in. As a short overview, travel hacking uses points and rewards to offset the cost of traveling. After researching, I was hooked, and now it has become a hobby. I hope it becomes a hobby for many other people as well!

So to start our points journey Brandon and I applied for the Chase Sapphire Reserve in November 2021 with a 60,000 bonus point offer after spending so much in three months. I was ecstatic! We would soon use those 120,000 bonus points to plan part of our honeymoon in Fiji! Knowing that these points could cover our flight to Fiji our cover part of our lodging made me giddy.

Now the critical thing here is to always pay off all your credit cards in full every month. Brandon and I do not have any debt on credit cards and never leave money on a card, and I will never put anything on a credit card that I can’t pay off right away.

Before I got the Chase Sapphire, I had the Chase Freedom, which I got in college in 2016. I was very nervous about opening another line of credit. I had so many misconceptions about how it would hurt my credit score or that people think having multiple lines of credit is irresponsible. However, those claims are all false if you use your credit wisely. As I have opened more cards, my credit score and ability to travel using points have increased.
I cannot wait to share more information about the points game!

If you are interested in opening up the Chase Sapphire Card you can use this referral link! Be sure to check that the bonuses are competitive (sometimes the referral link will have less of a bonus)!
