Why a Year of Travel?

First, I would like to say that you never need a reason to go and travel, and there doesn’t need to be something prolific that happens to you. Just do it! This is just our story and what pushed us to take the leap!

In August 2022, after our first international trip to Italy, we discussed the possibility of embarking on a year-long travel adventure. Our love for Italy and traveling ignited a spark in us, and we couldn’t stop thinking about all the unique places in the world waiting to be explored.

This is a picture from our trip in Italy at Amalfi Heavenly Gardens!

Initially, it seemed like a distant dream, a mere topic of conversation. However, as I began to follow the travels of Kara and Nate, I realized that a year of travel was a realistic goal. I delved deeper into the art of travel hacking, researching ways to earn points and use credit cards to help fund our journey.

But what truly solidified our commitment to this adventure was the passing of my uncle, who had Polycystic Kidney Disease, in December of 2022. As I watched him bravely stop his dialysis treatment, knowing that it would ultimately lead to his passing, I saw myself in his shoes as I was diagnosed with PKD in 2019.

Enjoy this picture of my kidneys 🙂 I am lucky enough to have no major complications so far!

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder that causes cysts to form on my kidneys, leading to kidney damage and dysfunction. PKD can progress in unpredictable ways, and I cannot ignore the possibility that I may need dialysis or a kidney transplant in my not-so-old adult life.

I have witnessed many people in my family battle this disease – my uncle, dad, grandma, cousins, and other family members who made me realize that life is precious and that we must make the most of our time. It motivated me to seize every opportunity, including the chance to travel the world.

Watching my father undergo dialysis in his early 60s was a difficult experience, and it highlighted the importance of taking advantage of life’s opportunities while we can.

However, there is also hope. My grandmother received a kidney transplant and lived a long, fulfilling life well into her 90s, and she is a testament to what is possible for those with PKD.

This disease has reminded me that life is precious and that we should seize every opportunity to create memories and have adventures. We are excited to embark on this journey and to share our experiences with others.

Do you need a reason like this to take a year of travel while you are young? Absolutely not, but this pushed me and Brandon to become serious about traveling. If anything, we hope this blog will help others travel even more and be why they start to travel!

We are excited to share this journey with you and share what we learn along the way!
